Keeping the Lake Healthy:
Two Weed Treatments Planned for This Summer
Last summer, mother nature gave us a run for our money!
You may recall we saw an extraordinary amount of healthy native lake weeds. The good news - healthy native weeds are great because this proves we have lessened invasive weeds to create space for the native weeds to return. However, too much of any kind of weeds is not good on our all sports lake.
Last summer, we planned for the treatment of invasive Eurasian Milfoil weeds but did not plan to remove other aquatic weeds due to budget constraints.
There was no way to predict and plan for the weather that brought excessive weeds last summer.
Here’s what happened:
Spring showers brought high lake water. By mid-June, our water level dropped and reached the set-level. The John Hartwig weir collar automatically stopped the flow of water out of the lake. The weir literally stopped flowing water out of Pine Lake in June.
Little Summer Rain – We received lots of spring showers but our area somehow dodged summer showers while all around us, numerous lakes and properties in Michigan continued to suffer from high water levels due to continued summer rainfall.
Photosynthesis – We experienced mega hot, beautiful sunny days and during COVID, how lucky and blessed we were to have such beautiful days. The hot sun produced photosynthesis that grew more weeds.
Hot, sunny & windy days brought water evaporation. Through evaporation, the water continued to drop throughout the rest of the summer thus revealing the newly grown native weeds.
SUMMARY
The summer of 2020 brought:
lots of spring showers
numerous hot and windy summer days
very little summer rain caused evaporation and low water level
photosynthesis brought MEGA native weed growth and as the water evaporated, more weeds were exposed
LESSONS LEARNED - In preparation for 2021, we will pilot two weed treatments this summer through two different methods. Both treatments should be completed in June. Watch the website and emailed communications on this.
GOAL - see less invasive and native weeds so members can enjoy our beautiful all sports lake.

Ideas for Your Waterfront - Build a Rain Garden
What is a rain garden? It’s a garden with a job that protects our water.
A rain garden’s purpose is to:
control puddles
keep basements dry by soaking up water run-off from roofs, driveways, walkways, parking lots and other hard surfaces
slow the aging of the lake and assist in keeping waters clean
prevent flooding
capture water that might carry lawn chemicals, contaminants, and mud into the lake.
Rain gardens feature native plants such as wildflowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, grasses and small shrubs. These native plants are local to our area with a deep root system making them drought tolerant while absorbing large amounts of water.
You can build your own rain garden as a great family project or hire a professional to design and install. You can choose from a large array of plants and flowers. In the spring West Bloomfield Township hosts plant sales that make the project not only fun, but economical.

Fish Kills May Be Common During Spring Thaw
The DNR recently reported: “fish kills may be common during spring thaw.”
After ice and snow melt on Michigan lakes this spring, it may be more likely for people to discover dead fish or other aquatic animals. While such sights can be startling, the Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that it is normal, since winter conditions can cause fish and other creatures such as turtles, frogs, toads and crayfish to die.
APRIL GOOSE EGG & NEST REMOVAL
Please contact us ASAP if you see geese gathering or nests during April. Removing goose eggs helps to keep e-coli bacteria to a minimum. Ten years ago, the goose population living on Pine Lake had increased to over 100. Through our annual Goose egg and nest removal efforts, this population was reduced to under 40. Once eggs hatch, we cannot remove the hatch-lings and unfortunately, they will return each year.
Each year, as part of the Lake Management Plan, during April, we ask for your help in locating Canadian geese eggs & nests. PLPOA works with DNR licensed Goose Busters LLC, to remove goose eggs and nests prior to hatching, in an effort to lessen the number of Canadian Geese on the lake.
Updates for Your Calendar
1) ANNUAL MEETING - MAY 6, 2021 at 7:00 pm via ZOOOM. Invitations will be emailed to up-to-date 2020 paid members. If you miss the meeting, a recording will be posted on the website later.
2) FIREWORKS: Pine Lake Country Club will announce the date, if COVID & Governor allows.
3) LAKE WATER LEVEL: Lake level and the John Hartwig Weir are checked every week by PLPOA. We typically see high water levels in June and then, levels begin to drop throughout the summer. However, low rainfall and 90-degree, sunny & windy days will have an impact on the lake level due to evaporation. Only Mother Nature knows what will happen this summer.
4) WATER SAFETY / EMERGENCY CONTACTS FOR YOUR YOUR CELL PHONE The Oakland County Marine Division sheriff boat will be on the lake again this summer. Please take the time to review the Pine Lake Rules & Etiquette with your friends and family.
If you see an emergency or violation take pics, video and get as much detail such as date, time, boat type, color, MC# and call the appropriate number below. You can ask for a jump boat.

5) COMMUNICATIONS: Check out our website. Riparian’s and HOA Treasurers can pay their annual dues online. We have provided a myriad of information about Pine Lake, our lake management plan, peruse earlier newsletters as well as many other topics. We send a comprehensive newsletter on the first Saturday of each month from March through November. Each year, in late May, annual dues notices are set through email and can be paid on the website. We ask that you pay your dues before the end of August.
Would you, your association, club or your business like to become a Sponsor? Would you like to donate? Visit our website and contact us.
6) HOW MANY BOATS ARE ON PINE LAKE ON ANY GIVEN DAY? The annual boat count last summer revealed 482 motorized boats on our 400-acre lake. We saw the effects of the COVID pandemic as many families stayed home and bought boats, paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, wave runners, RV’s, camping equipment, etc. Outdoor equipment sales continue to be in high demand. Help us by following all safety rules on our website. Consider taking a safety class before operating a boat. (contact the Oakland County Marine Division for class information)
7) FERTILIZER: Observe the West Bloomfield Township “Manufactured Fertilizer Ordinance” Sec. 14.5.
October 1 to May 1 - No lawn fertilizer
Never fertilize within 50‘ of any water’s edge
Please Inform your lawn contractors about these limitations.
8) WAKE & SURF BOAT ROUTE FOR PINE LAKE: Our mission is to promote safety, educate, protect water quality, and the watershed property around the lake. The map is a guide and a suggested route and posted on the website. Use your judgement, stay in deep water, be safe and respectful to other boaters. If route is too crowded, make the circle wider or try another time. We received your Wake Board and Surf Boat Route 2020 feedback – Thank You.
After consulting with lake specialist, Dr. Jude, members, businesses and board members, we ask wake & surf boats to use this deep water route to preserve the lake bottom and respect shorelines from property damage to sea walls, boat lifts and boats while maintaining safe boating practices as described HERE.
Factors that went into the development of the map:
Safety
Riparian damage to boats and property from large wake.
Research showing wake/surf boats stir bottom sediment in the lake (not good).
Floaters and swimmers use of the lake
Boats, PWC, skiers, paddle boarders, tubing
And wake/surf boats
Looking Forward to a Safe and Happy Summer of Safe Water Sports While Promoting Good Lake Stewardship as We Protect Our Beautiful Lake!

A Season In Review
2020 - the year of COVID 19 - changed the way we live and meet - held the first successful virtual Annual Meeting: approved bylaws to allow virtual meetings, approved budget & minutes and 4 board member elections
April - Goose Buster's collected 22 eggs and 5 nests to help combat e-coli (means less fecal matter in the lake)
June - Aquatic weed treatment was successful, lessening invasive Eurasian milfoil weeds that created space for many native aquatic weeds to grow. Low water levels exposed even more weeds. The board is exploring an additional weed treatment to lessen native weeds next summer.
Experienced the nicest summer weather - hot, windy, sunny with very little rain - caused lower water levels such that weir water flow stopped in June
Record number of outdoor recreational vehicle / sports sales due to COVID 19
July - Record high boat count with 482 boats on our 400 acre lake, an increase of over 100 Riparian boats from 2019. We had a higher numbers of paddle boards and kayaks which meant lots of activity on the lake
Due to so many new boat owners on the lake, we increased sheriff patrol by 38 hours and thankfully did not have any serious incidents
Two deviant non-resident personal water craft users who attempted to kill a swan while breaking numerous lake rules, were removed from the lake
Experienced the nicest summer weather ever - hot, windy, sunny with very little rain - caused lower water levels that exposed many weeds
Pine Lake Country Club's July 4th fireworks were cancelled due to COVID 19, first time ever
To protect shallow lake bottom and minimized damage to sea walls, established a deep water wake boat path

Questions From Members
Q. What can be done to avoid this from ever happening again? I came close to running over a paddle boarder recently because the sun was in my eyes. I didn't see her until the very last second. Luckily, I was able to veer off and miss, thank goodness. The paddle boarder jumped off her board to avoid getting hit. Life threatening for the paddler and frightening for me.
A. We suggest paddle boarders and kayaks wear bright colors or a neon vest so they get the attention of distracted boaters. See the article below called "Make Yourself Visible".
Q. I understand Michigan Lakes & Streams had their virtual convention recently, can you give us some take away highlights?
We learned there doesn't seem to be any one magic bullet to eradicate aquatic invasive species. There are however many management strategies. Strategies range from literally getting in the water and pulling weeds out at the roots to treating with various EPA safe rated Herbicides. The Board is working with our limnologists for options.
There was mention of a aquatic weed harvester that pulls weeds at the root level and then vacuums them up instead of cutting them like other harvesters. This machine has been out for 6 years and could be an answer for shallow water weeds - not sure about deep water weeds OR pricing - stay tuned. It is called Eco- Harvester. We will learn more as information becomes available.
We learned we simply need to be more aggressive in getting people more involved so the community knows what we are doing and why - such as having a Webex or Zoom November virtual "fireside chat" with members to talk about solutions, with a guest speaker.
We learned the single most effective way to stop the introduction of aquatic invasive species/ weeds, is at the launch site - the cleaning of boats before leaving launch - must educate the community to CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY, DISPOSE.
Rain gardens/ natural shorelines nicely landscaped, are not only beautiful but a very effective way to absorb fertilizer run off ... looking forward to having more active participants get involved with implementing a rain garden at the waters edge. See “Shoreline Living” article below.

Make Yourself Visible
A great suggestion from one of our members, Milda Raney - Paddle boarding and kayaking are wonderful ways to enjoy Pine Lake. We have seen a significant increase in the number of people enjoying non-motorized water sports this year. During the morning and evening hours, with the intense sun and reflection on the water, boaters can have difficulty seeing people in the water on their boards. Please consider making yourself more visible in the water by wearing bright colors or neon reflective gear. This outer wear has been popular for running and biking to prevent accidents on the roadway. IKEA and Home Depot sell an inexpensive neon reflective vest for this purpose that would provide more visibility to non-motorized activities in the water.
See details on the IKEA vest HERE

Water Levels
CURRENTLY - Lake water level is 1"4" lower than ideal largely due to reduced summer rain, high temperatures, sun and wind. Water-flowing through the weir stopped in June. We watched storms on radar, split and half go north and the other half go south such that we missed a fair amount of rain. While many lakes in the state are at flood levels, we are at a low level. Ultimately, Mother Nature is always in charge as she determines how much wind, sunshine, rain and evaporation take place that will decide lake levels. See original historical chart HERE

Q. Why so many aquatic weeds on the lake?
A. We have been blessed with a fabulous warm and sunny summer: great for aquatic weed growth. You may be seeing native pond weeds. We have good, native weeds that are necessary for a balanced and healthy, all sports lake. In fact, this is good news, there was a significant increase of NATIVE pond weed overall, in biodiversity, which is a good sign. Despite our efforts to minimize the use of lawn fertilizers, in the watershed, we know that lawn fertilizer drains into the lake after a rain and feeds weeds. Pond weeds are good for the overall environmental health of our 400 acre lake. That said, no one likes weeds in the boat lanes and closer to shore when swimming, boating, canoeing, paddle-boarding, etc. Pond weed has taken over where the invasive Eurasian Milfoil was treated. The board is assessing a new vendor with a two step treatment approach for 2021 to treat the invasive Eurasian Milfoil and shoreline pond weeds. This could alleviate some of the concerns we have seen in certain sections of Pine Lake.
Q. What can I do to help the water quality?
A. Plant a garden with plants along the shore to stop runoff. West Bloomfield has a list of plants. Do not fertilize if you use lake water, there are plenty of nutrients already in the water. If you use city water only fertilize 2 a year (6 times is too many and can be recommended by Fertilizer Companies) fertilizer - weeds - rain garden/ green belt
Q. What is the difference bolder barrier vs sea wall?
A. A sea wall bounces waves back into the lake, a bolder barrier properly sloped, will absorb waves better than a sea wall. No new sea walls are allowed, per DEQ / EGLE, only repairs to an existing sea wall.
Q. What if I only want to pay my dues with a check?
A. Mail your dues $225.00 to PO Box 222, Keego Harbor, MI 48320 (Lake Associations, the Marina and the Pine Lake Country Club were emailed invoices. Please send us your email at info@pinelakemi.com

Turtle in a sea of Eurasian Milfoil invasive weeds
INVASIVE WEED TREATMENT vs NO TREATMENT?
Once again, we want to thank members for not boating on June 29, 2020. Your cooperation allowed for a more effective treatment because the herbicide granules could drop to the bottom of the Eurasian milfoil (EU) weed beds without wave disturbance.
Questions from Members
Q. To treat or not to treat aquatic invasive weeds?
A. That is the question we ask ourselves every day! Really, there just isn't an option to do nothing, in fact we are at war with invasive weeds! If we don't do anything and let these invasive weeds grow, our lake will become an environmental disaster with devastating effects on the habitat, Eco system, boat props, swimmers, etc., not to mention property values. Please see all of the options we explored for weed management in question #4 HERE . The PLPOA Board with the help of experts and other resources around the country are always looking for the most efficient, non-chemical, cost effective, approach, but to date, there just isn't another viable option. Small inland lakes all around the country are dealing with these same issues.
Q. What is the process for developing the weed management plan each year?
A. It is a year long process. We hire a limnologist (Dr. Jude) and weed specialist (Kieser & Associates) to test water quality, map weed location, weed type and weed density throughout the spring and summer. We hire Savin Lake Services to attain necessary permits, apply the herbicide by GPS coordinates, and later, harvest weeds - as the budget allows. All three specialists will report their findings and make recommendations to the board in an early fall special board study session. This collaboration, along with the projected budget, projected dues collection result in the formulation of our Lake Management Plan for the year.
Q. If you make a plan and then treat the invasive weeds, why are they not disappearing?
A. The traditional 2,4d herbicide treatment that we have used for about six years has kept Eurasian milfoil (EU) in check by reducing the thickness of the beds, but is not eliminating it. Our experts tell us that some EU beds have hybridized and are showing resistance to 2,4d, even with the addition of bio-wash, a substance, that prepares the surface stem, so the 2,4d can be absorbed. Our primary focus is on EU beds in the boating lanes. We do not treat natural, native pond weed per DEQ restrictions. The EU weed beds that we do treat, are based on specific, targeted, mapping AND permission from Riparians. Riparians must consent, by way of a signed permission form, to treat weeds in front of their property. If we don't have permission from a Riparian then we can not treat the EU bed in front of their home, which will keep EU on our lake. The Board is always looking for better alternatives. A new option that has been presented to us is ProcelaCOR, another low risk alternative for treating invasive EU. Read more about ProcelaCOR HERE . Invasive weeds on Pine Lake consist of EU and small areas of Starry stonewort with the potential for more as reported by Dr. Jude and Kieser & Associates.
Q. Why am I seeing more weeds on the lake?
A. That said, no one likes any kind of weeds when swimming, boating, canoeing, etc. When necessary, and in the budget, we bring in a weed harvester at a cost of $7,500, to cut native pond weed in the boat lanes. We have learned that we can not harvest EU because pieces break off and re-seed which perpetuates more EU. Our experts recommend:
Continued management of EU Monitor for Starry stone-wort Harvest native pond weeds only if they pose a significant impediment in the boat lanes as budget allows See previous Q & A's from members on the website HERE .
Email YOUR questions.

SUGGESTED WAKE/ SURF BOAT ROUTE
Experts warn about lake & property damage from large waves and have two recommendations for surf and wake boats to follow. We are not alone, other small lakes are having similar problems. Enjoy this great sport and please be mindful of your wake as it effects other boats, seawalls, lifts, and the shallow lake bottom.
Recommendations:
1. Stay 200 feet away from the shoreline
2. Establish a deep water wake boat route that will protect lake bottom, shorelines, docked boats, lifts and other aquatic equipment & habitat.
INCIDENTS ON PINE LAKE - JULY
We increased Sheriff hours due to more boat activity this summer. As of 7/12/20 - Contacts with Deputy 136, Tickets 3, Warnings 81, Citizens assist/service calls 5, Safety inspections 48, Total Sheriff hours so far 62.
There was a swan attack by two jet ski operators. A member got the MC # and is prosecuting. Jet Skiers were renters - the owner has revoked their lake privileges.
WATER LEVELS DATING BACK TO 1968

NEW WAKE/SURF BOAT ROUTE in Deep Water
FIREWORKS CANCELLED FOR 2020
The Pine Lake Country Club announced the September 6th fireworks are CANCELLED due to COVID. We thank the PLCC for years of magnificent pyrotechnic displays and look forward to many more years of this community tradition.
NEW WAKE/SURF BOAT ROUTE in Deep Water
We received your feedback – Thank You!
Our mission is to promote safety, educate, protect water quality, and watershed property around the lake. We developed a suggested a deep water wake & surf route for Pine Lake to preserve our lake bottom and respect (stay away) shorelines to protect property damage to sea walls, boat lifts and boats while maintaining safe boating practices as described HERE.
After consultation with our lake experts, businesses, and board members, the map was created. This is our best effort to keep everyone safe, accommodate wake/surf boats so we can all enjoy Pine Lake, as an all sports lake. We know the wake/surf boat path is not perfect and that it lessens the area for those who like to float, but still allows room north of the PLCC point. Factors that went into the development of the map considered
Safety

NOTE FROM A MEMBER: Rule Violation Need Help
Dear PLPOA,
After sunset, often jet skis are illegally being used on the lake and it is difficult to identify or photograph them because of the speed.
There have also been speed boats whizzing past close to midnight on weekdays on multiple occasions, again very hard to get out of the house and photograph so late at night. Hard for the cops to come and enforce something on the water so late at night.
I will do my best to report any violations, but there are challenges.
I think these are habitual offenders and if an email is sent out to all the members of the PLPOA it might be easier to identify with help, who these offenders are so they can be appropriately reprimanded so this behavior is corrected.
Thanks for all your help.

Q & A ON INVASIVE WEED TREATMENT
QUESTION - What invasive weed beds were treated?
ANSWER - Hybrid Eurasian Milfoil was treated. Native pond weeds, the sign of a healthy lake, were not treated per DEQ restrictions.
QUESTION - Where on the lake are the invasive weed beds and that were treated?
ANSWER - See map showing the GPS coordinates on our website https://www.pinelakemi.com/lake-management Savin Lake Services will send us a 2020 map showing treated areas and we will post it on the website.
QUESTION - What is the best method for treating invasive weeds? Can a holistic approach be used?
ANSWER - The PLPOA Board with the help of experts and other resources are always looking for the most efficient, cost effective and non chemical approach, but to date, there just isn't a viable option. We are always looking for better alternatives.

Aquatic Weed Treatment Completed!

Aquatic Weed Treatment Completed - Thank You!
On that gorgeous, hot, sunny, no wind day of Monday, June 29, members stayed off the lake for 24 hours while 2,4d granules were applied over the top of GPS targeted Eurasian Milfoil (EU) weed beds. Further, members remained off the lake to allow time for the granules to drop to the weed roots and dissolve properly without any wave disruption.
The support received by the community in staying off the lake was visibly noticed not only by the applicators, Savin Lake Services, but members who could only watch our flat and very inviting lake on one very gorgeous day.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Amazing!
Savin Lake Services treated just under 20 acres of aquatic invasive EU weed beds on our 400 acre lake.
As reported by our experts, some of our EU weed beds have “hybridized” from 2,4d treatments. In other words, they have diminished in size but refuse to die.
PILOT PROGRAM
As a result of hybridized EU that refuses to die after 2,4d treatment, our experts recommended we do a pilot program on one small hybridized EU bed near the marina. They recommended we apply a newer, very low impact product called ProcellaCOR. We will carefully watch the pilot area and review its success. The cost for ProcellaCOR is much more than 2,4d, but the area treated was small. Read more about ProcellaCOR HERE.
GOOD NEWS
We have seen native pond weed start to return in the boat lane where EU previously blocked sunlight for their growth. This is what we want to see on a healthy lake.
The recent GPS invasive weed scans prove the existing EU weed beds have reduced in size since last summer, after 2,4d treatment which is good news, but we want to eradicate these invasive weeds along the boat lane.
GOALS
Our goal is that invasive EU (and any other invasive species) cease to exist on the lake and allow healthy pond weed and other natural habitat to thrive. You may remember the effects of zebra mussels from a few years ago. They cut your feet, attached to everything, ate algae and eventually died from lack of food source.
Map shows boat lane Eurasian milfoil that was treated (highlighted in green) on June 29, 2019
CLEAN BOATS CLEAN LAKES INITIATIVE
With the new state law and initiative called “Clean Boats Clean Lakes”, we hope to NEVER introduce any more invasive species in the lake. With community support we can do this. We will be posting signs at each boat launch as a reminder.
Article from MI Waterfront Alliance eNewsletter, June 29, 2020
“Millions of dollars are spent each year in Michigan to control the impacts of aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels, sea lamprey and Eurasian watermilfoil,” said Kevin Walters, aquatic biologist at EGLE. “It only takes a few minutes to do a walk-around of your watercraft and trailer and drain water to make sure everything is clear of material that doesn’t belong.”
Short “How To” Video – HERE
Across the state we want to remind watercraft owners they should follow best practices and clean their boats, trailers and equipment to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
The most important message this year is for boaters to “Clean, Drain and Dry” boats, trailers and all equipment and gear after each use on any lake, river or stream to prevent spreading invasive plants and other aquatic invasive species from one water body to another. State law requires:
Make sure watercraft and trailers are free of all aquatic organisms and plants before transporting or launching.
Removing drain plugs and draining all water from bilges, ballast tanks and live wells before moving watercraft.
Avoiding releasing unused bait into the water.
Releasing fish only into the same water body where they were caught to avoid the spread of invasive species and fish diseases.

FIREWORKS DATE - SEPTEMBER 6, 2020
The Pine Lake Country Club changed the fireworks date to September 6 due to the COVID19 state mandate of social distancing.
WEST BLOOMFIELD FIREWORKS ORDINANCE
Fireworks may only be discharged June 29 through July 5, 11:00 AM to 11:45 PM by a sober 18 year old (or older).
If you shoot fireworks on your property or shoreline, remove all fireworks debris from the lake and ground the next morning, as it leaches toxins into the lake. Remember: All things on the ground make their way to the lake after rain or snow melt.
Per WB township code - violation of rules is a $500 Fine.
“The PLPOA mission is to ensure safety, informed stewardship & promote good water quality for our most valuable resource.”
WAKE AND SURF BOATING
The latest water sport that is exploding on many lakes is wake surfing. This great is sport requires a wake boat that has a water filled ballast capacity of up to 5,000 pounds and as such, when the boat accelerates it makes huge waves for a person to surf, w/out a pull rope. The wake boat only travels about 8 -10 mph. The result is two huge waves to ride, up close and right behind the boat. Because the wave that the surfer rides is within about five feet from the boat, the surfer can chat with the passengers and listen to music. What an awesome experience for everyone! Not only is this sport fun but we are seeing more and more wake boats appearing on many lakes. This has caused some lake boards and scientists to scratch their heads…
HOW COULD SOMETHING SO MUCH FUN BE A PROBLEM?
Many of you have experienced the huge waves created by surf boats. Some of you have emailed to complain about the large waves causing damage to your boat, lift and sea wall. Further, we are now reading publications telling us about the surf boat damage to the bottom of the lake in shallow areas. What we are learning is shallow water wake surfing boats dredge and stir up sediments. This causes……. The end result is damage to…..
Our experts warn about lake damage and made two recommendations for Pine Lake. Pine Lake is not alone in this. Other small lakes have similar problems.
Recommendations from the Experts:
1. Stay 200 feet from the shoreline, in deeper water.
2. Establish a deep water wake surf route that will protect lake bottom, shorelines and other aquatic equipment.
We ask for your cooperation. For those who like to float , you will need to move a little further north, toward that shoreline.
INTRODUCING - New Wake and Surf Boat Boat Path for ballast filled boats while in tow. Established July 5, 2020 to preserve and protect shallow lake bottom , docked boats, lifts and sea walls.

AQUATIC WEED TREATMENT DETAILS
Weather permitting (no wind or rain) 2-4d granules will be dropped over the top of the aquatic invasive Eurasian Milfoil weed beds on Monday, June 29, after 9:00 am via DNR permit, owner permission, applied by Savin Lake Services, LLC.
If June 29 is a windy or rainy day, the treatment will be rescheduled. Check the pinelakemi.com top banner or Facebook for up-to-date details on June 29.
PLEASE NO BOATING /PWC or SWIMMING starting Monday, June 29, 9:00 am for 24 Hours so the 2,4d granules sprinkled over the top of the weed beds can drop to the roots and be absorbed.
Sprinkler Systems drawing water from the lake should be turned off for three days. Every lake shore member must make an individual decision about watering, however, PLPOA has had no reported issues with drawing water from the lake after the 3rd day post treatment. This year, as in past years, the intake for most watering systems is 75-100 feet from the treatment areas.

June 13, 2020 Update
Invasive Aquatic weed treatment scheduled for Monday, June 29, 9:00 AM - No swimming, boating or PWC for 24 hours please…
Lake Treatment Scheduled for Mon. June 29, 9:00 AM
WEATHER PERMITTING (no wind or rain) Savin Lake Services will apply the 2, 4-D granules over the top of designated, DNR permitted, invasive Eurasian Mil-foil (EU) aquatic weed beds on Monday, June 29.
Watch for confirmation of this date on the website, Pinelakemi.com landing page, Facebook and another email such as this.
NO BOAT TRAFFIC OR SWIMMING ON JUNE 29 so the 2,4-D granules can settle directly to the EU roots. Wave action can disturb the granules and move them to another area and miss the EU. Too expensive to miss - won't hurt anything but it is a waste of money. Member dues fund the Lake Management Plan.
Intake sprinklers from the lake should be off on June 29 - 30.
Q & A About Weed Treatments
1) When will Eurasian Milfoil weed treatments end?
There are several responses to this question. Expense and research play a part. When we started this process we were told we would eradicate EU. However, the EU has learned to hybridize and this limits the effectiveness of traditional 2, 4-D along with other variables listed below. The hybridized weed beds treated with 2, 4-D, do stop the EU from growing, it becomes distressed, but does not die. Our goal still remains - to eradicate this invasive weed!
Because we are an all sports lake where boats travel across the EU weeds, cutting weed pieces that re-root elsewhere, we will likely not be rid of this weed, however, treatments in the past years have managed to help keep the weed beds to a minimum. Weed scans show us that EU weed beds have not grown in size, and that 2,4-D is allowing us to manage size. 2, 4-D reduces/ shrinks the weeds from the surface so that when the boats drive over the top of the weed bed, props miss the weed and therefore no new cuts can re-root and grow.
There are a few homeowners that do not give consent to treat the EU weed beds in front of their homes so those weeds beds will continue to spread and grow if untreated. Further, as boats travel over and through them, prop cut weed segments will re-root and expand the weed bed.
Some EU beds have learned to hybridize, reject 2, 4-D and survive. The board is exploring another safe herbicide called ProcellaCOR that other lakes have used that have proven to only kill the EU plant. We will be conducting a pilot in 2020.
2) Why Treat the weeds with 2,4-D?
Eurasian Mil foil (EU) is an identified invasive weed in Pine Lake that if left alone, will spread across the entire surface of the lake like a canopy, and cause havoc to aquatic life, the ego system, swimmers and boat props. If untreated, EU will grow, spread over the lake surface and block sunlight that will kill the good plants and food for natural habitat like fish and plant life. We budgeted $17,000 from PLPOA dues from the 2020 budget for treatment and permits.
3) Can we bring in a weed harvester to cut the weeds instead of applying 2,4-D?
Our experts have told us EU should not be harvested because it will re-root and spread. Weed harvesting is not budgeted for 2020.
4) What are other alternatives to keep EU at bay?
The Board and scientists have investigated various methods of removing EU and selected 2,4-D with a bio-wash as the standard treatment for EU. Options investigated with our experts for EU weed control:
1. Introduce weevil bugs that feed on EU. It is very expensive and has not been proven to be successful, particularly in our area.
2.Water rakes to uproot weeds. Doing this with EU would cause pieces to break off, re-root and spread - not a good solution.
3. Lake water blankets. These blankets cover the bottom of the lake preventing sunlight and killing all vegetation in that area. Expensive and labor intensive.
If funds were more readily available, ProcellaCOR is a safe, selective, systematic herbicide for management of EU aquatic vegetation that does not impact native plants. PLPOA will conduct a pilot in 2020. The Board has looked at all of the above and more, non-herbicide approaches and nothing seems viable for our lake. That’s why our lake association uses herbicide to manage weeds. We are not trying to eliminate all the weeds in Pine Lake, we are trying to manage the invasive weeds. Native pond weeds are good for the lake's ecosystem.
Fireworks Rescheduled
Sunday, September 6, 2020 at dusk.
The annual Pine Lake Country Club fireworks have been rescheduled as a Labor Day celebration on Sunday, September 6 due to COVID social distancing. The Social distancing rule is still in effect per the Governor, therefore, the Pine Lake Country Club rescheduled to comply.
See the next article below, about removing your personal fireworks debris so toxins are stopped from leeching into the lake. We will keep you informed should this date change - also watch the website for announcements.
Next Day Fireworks Debris Removal
If you plan to shoot your own fireworks, please remove the debris the next day. New research shows debris from fireworks in the leeches toxins that will end up in the lake.
Letter from a Member...
Dear PLPOA,
Just took a spin on the lake multiple rule violations galore. Two boaters pulling 3 kids on tubes - no spotter. Drivers looking backwards watching kids. Paddle boarders out no life jackets and one boater flying around the lake wrong way. Couldn’t get MC numbers.
Given that looks like we are going to have a lot more activity this year and more potential problems can you mail out one page copy of the lake rules?
Pine Lake Rules As Monitored by Sheriff - Updated 2020
You are responsible for knowing and following the DNR State of MI Boat Rules and the Pine Lake Rules
Residents have reported these major violations in the past two weeks:
Paddle-boarders out w/o a life-jacket on themselves or attached to the board
Wake boards coming close to docks instead of remaining 200 feet from shore
Boaters wake surfing / water bladders in shallow water- we ask they use only the large
portion of the lake
Boaters playing excessive loud music
Boaters going in the wrong direction
Laws For Transporting Your Boat

New Research Data Protecting Water Quality
Outdoor Lighting – Recent studies show that night lighting inhibits zoo plankton from eating surface algae causing more algae blooms that kill aquatic life.
Outcome- Point down toward the land and not the water. Use motion sensors and lights that do not shine or reflect across the lake. Aim your lighting down and illuminate only the smallest area of your property.
*** The Pine Lake Manor Beach Association has done a great job with their lighting.
Firework Debris - Recent studies show that debris from fireworks leach harmful chemicals into the water affecting water quality and habitat.
Outcome - Homeowners who display their own fireworks should know the township ordinance allows it a couple of days before and after July 4.
Should your family do this, next day, kindly remove your firework debris from your shoreline.
April 16 Update: Geese Nest & Egg Help
Assistance Needed in Locating Geese Nests…
We Need Your Assistance
Locating Geese Nests
Our Pine Lake Management Plan, under the guidance of experts, calls for controlling the number of geese as one of many ways to protect water quality and reduce E coli. Goose Busters is our DNR permitted vendor that collects the goose eggs.
Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order prohibits Goose Busters from using a motorized boat. We appealed for an exemption which the Governor denied.
We need your help - please provide a description and address where the nests are located to info@pinelakeMI.com
Goose Busters will collect the eggs starting April 20th, which can only be collected during the next 3 weeks. Goose Busters may need to access your property.
A shout-out to Township Supervisor Steve Kaplan for writing a letter on our behalf to the Governor asking for an exception. The Governor denied Kaplan’s request. See Supervisor Kaplan's letter here.

Electric vs Natural Lighting…DID YOU KNOW?
Recent studies show that light pollution around lakes (night illumination) inhibits zoo plankton from eating surface algae causing algae blooms that kill aquatic life and lower water quality.
Do your part for the lake by using lights that have motion sensors and do not shine or reflect across the lake surface.
Reduce the wattage of exterior bulbs near the lake front.
Michigan Riparian Magazine recommends: Aim your lighting down and illuminate only the smallest area, with wattage no greater than that needed for visibility and safety.
Light only your property, not your neighbor’s property.

Great News - Eurasian Water Milfoil Has Decreased!
GREAT NEWS!
EURASIAN WATER MILFOIL HAS DECREASED!
Keiser and Associates, a limnology group and our specialist, Dr. Pullman, reported the invasive aquatic Eurasian Milfoil (EM) "has reduced significantly throughout much of Pine Lake". He went on to say "when comparing the early 2019 survey to the late season survey EM has lessened significantly". "Biodiversity, structural diversity and nuisance conditions all seem to have improved from 2018 when comparing both 2018 and 2019 early season surveys".
This means the herbicide treatments were effective.
Please note: We will have pods of EM on the lake in areas where lakefront homeowners have not given permission to treat, but in the other areas, EM has significantly lessened.

NEW STATE LAW FOR BOAT LAUNCHING
A new state law, effective in March of this year, requires boaters to do the following before transporting any watercraft over land:
Remove all drain plugs from bilges, ballast tanks, and live wells.
Drain all water from any live wells and bilges.
Ensure that the watercraft, trailer, and any conveyance used to transport the watercraft or trailer are free of aquatic organisms, including plants.
REPORT IT!
If you see poor lake behavior, an unlawful boater or an accident, get the MC number and report it to the Oakland County Sheriff. Our officer may be on the lake but not see the incident that you see.
Call 248 858 4950, press #8 to speak directly to a dispatch officer.
Although we have sheriff presence on the lake, the officer is not always on patrol so members must be vigilant in the interest of safety. Let's send a message that unlawful behavior will not be tolerated by the sheriff or YOU.
Enjoy the INCREDIBLE Colors as We Transition into Fall

JULY WEED CUT COMPLETED
PLPOA’s weed harvest vendor, SAVIN Lake Services, began the process of harvesting and collecting surface, healthy, pond weed on July 15. The process took over a week to complete. The good news is, we have an abundance of natural healthy weeds on the lake. Savin cut, removed and hauled away, thousands of pounds of weeds. The area of focus for the weed harvest was along the boat path, for the entire lake. Weed harvesting is an expensive service that your PLPOA dues pay for.
DID YOU PAY YOUR ANNUAL DUES?
Invoices were mailed to Pine Lake Homeowner Association Presidents, Pine Lake Country Club, Pine Lake Marina and lake front Riparians last month, June 2019.
If you did not get notice for payment of your annual PLPOA dues, contact your Association leader. Riparians who did not receive an invoice please contact Gary Ludwiczak at glud@comcast.net
Your dues play a very important role in helping to maintain our Pine Lake.
Did you know that Pine Lake is rated at #8 (with 10 being the highest rating) by Dr's Jude and Pullman? We believe our rating is in part, a direct reflection of the guidance we receive from our lake management specialists.
WHAT YOUR DUES PAY FOR
Weed Control - Herbicide - $20,000 - 35%
Weed Harvesting - $12,500 - 22%
Aquest Quadrant Weed Study and Water Quality Testing - $6750 - 12%
Weir Maintenance - $5,000 - 9%
Sheriff Patrol - $3900 - 7%
Insurance - $3100 - 5%

ATTENTION WAKE BOATS
Wave Boarding - We ask anyone with boats designed for wave boarding to only use the large portion of the lake, and to stop wave boarding as you return to the small westerly part of Pine Lake.
We are getting numerous reports of damage to docks and sea walls in the narrow passage between the two sections of Pine Lake. (Interlaken and Pine Lake Road)
We ask you to respect these requests in the interest of costly repairs to those homeowners.
Thank You!

Details for Homeowners, Swimmers and Boaters:
Weather permitting the 2-4-D aquatic weed herbicide granules will be dropped over the top of the aquatic invasive Eurasian Milfoil weed beds on Mon. June 17, by Savin Lake Services, LLC.(weather date is Tuesday, June 18)
If Monday is a windy day, the treatment will be moved to Tuesday. If Tuesday it is windy, treatment will be rescheduled. Check the PLPOA facebook page to confirm treatment. PLPOA FACEBOOK
2- 4- D aquatic weed herbicide will be applied where the milfoil is present & we have owner permission to treat.
For those who draw water from the lake for a sprinkler system, the directions from the 2-4-D manufacturer says no watering for 14 days. However, Paul Barber from Savin Lake Services stated that we are applying the same herbicide that you put on your lawns in weed & feed to kill dandelions. The 2-4-D will not kill established lawns, it is recommended to shut off the zones for ornamental flowers as they are Dicots which the 2-4-D can kill.
Resources for 2-4-D aquatic weed treatment - click here for more information about 2-4-D
Sprinkler Systems drawing water from the lake - Every PLPOA homeowner must make an individual decision about watering, however, PLPOA has not received any reported issues with drawing water from the lake for watering after the 3rd day time frame has passed.
As in past years the intake for most watering systems is 75-100 feet from the treatment areas.
Savin suggests NO BOATING or SWIMMING for 24 Hours after treatment so the granules that are sprinkled over the top of the weed beds are not disturbed. Again, watch the PLPOA Facebook for updates.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping PLPOA manage the aquatic invasive weeds in Pine Lake.
Highlights from the Annual Meeting
Highlights with a few slides from the presentation are posted on PLPOA Facebook
We heard presentations from specialists Dr. Jude and Dr. Pullman including the latest water quality and weed mapping updates for the lake
Dr. Jude reported our water quality is "OK"
Dr. Pullman reported Eurasian Milfoil is hybridizing
Discussion about the lake management plan for aquatic weeds
Discussion about the need to increase activities to keep Pine Lake’s aquatic weeds in check via herbicide and the need for a native weed cut in boat lanes
Both of our specialists rated Pine Lake at an #8 with 10 being the highest rating.
Costs associated with maintaining sheriff patrol, weed cuts & weir maintenance, are increasing.
The above activities will increase the PLPOA budget which is comprised of your dues collected around the lake.
After discussion it was unanimously decided to approve a dues increase to $225.00 for Riparians, Associations & Businesses.
Members voted to re- elect John Hartwig, Stacy Sullivan, Heath Williams, Chris Viegas and Elaine Coffman board members to the PLPOA Board.
The Dues Increase Will Provide the Following
With the increase in dues PLPOA plans to:
Add a boat lane weed cut of native Pond Weed in mid-late July
Pay increased costs for Weir clean-out, which is now 2 times a day in Spring
Pay the increase in Sheriff coverage of $3,900 per year
Cover postage increases for the Annual Meeting notices
Add a bio-wash pre-treatment for areas with larger EU (Eurasian Milfoil) beds
Treat the EU beds with 2-4-D on Monday, June 17.
Explore costs associated with a pilot to add Alum to a deep hole to improve oxygen levels
How YOU Can Make A Difference
You Can Make A Difference for Pine Lake in 2019
Plant a rain garden/ green belt along your shoreline that will stop water run off into the lake. Learn to create, restore and manage a natural shoreline from MSU Extension Programs.
Observe the New West Bloomfield Fertilizer Ordinance
1.) If YOU MUST, use weed kill only on your lawn between May 1 to October 1st. 2.) Do not apply fertilizer within 50 feet of the water’s edge. We suggest using larger companies, example, Tru-Green, because their scientists use mixtures to prevent over fertilizing.
Before launching your boat from another lake, empty your bilge water far away from Pine Lake to prevent invasive species and plants from entering Pine Lake.
Always blow the leaves away from the lake. Collect and haul them away.
Clean & Inspect your septic field. Make sure it does not leak phosphorous that breeds algae and causes harm to the lake.
PINE LAKE MANOR Subdivision, disconnect pipes that dump gray water into the canal from sumps, rain water, etc.
