Weed Treatment for Spring 2022Savin Lake Services will be on the lake several times this summer doing 2 aquatic weed surveys (spring/ fall) and aquatic weed treatments in June. If you see Savin’s boats on the lake, for aquatic weed surveys or treatment please know, this is Board and DNR/ EGLE permit approved. Savin found 2,4D is no longer effective against Eurasian Milfoil aquatic weeds as the EU has hybridized & rejects it. We’ve seen 2 years of successful pilots to manage the density and size of larger invasive Eurasian Milfoil (EU) beds. This spring we will focus on the large EU Bed west of Interlaken. PLPOA has significantly reduced the EU beds near the Marina and Birch Harbor using ProcelaCOR, which has proven effective against invasive Eurasian Milfoil. We are excited to see the results after the treatment near the ski course this summer. Your hard-earned dues, help address invasive Eurasian Milfoil. Treatment areas for 2022 are similar to 2021 and will be identified at the annual meeting via our Specialists and after completing the May, aquatic weed survey. The vendors and board selection of the treatment sites will: Control or eliminate the aquatic invasive EU weed from main recreational areas, to preserve the health/safety of swimmers, paddle boarders, kayaks, and boaters. Leave non-navigable & fish habitat areas untreated with invasive and native aquatic weeds. Budget allows for boat lane areas only. Maintain a variety of healthy native aquatic weeds for the fish and habitat. Maintain a balance of aquatic weed density and height for recreational activities and help lake oxygen levels. Identify ways to save on aquatic weed treatment and reporting costs.
Lake Health and Safety is everyone’s #1 Priority… and yet Invasive aquatic species pose a danger. Invasive species can take over a lake and impact the recreation and appearance, thus impact property values. When large areas of Eurasian Milfoil grow, it poses a risk to boaters, swimmers, kayaks, & paddle boarders. In 2022 we have plans to use a diluted ProcelaCOR treatment in some boat lane areas. Savin Lake Services applied ProcelaCOR on other lakes in our area last year with great success. Savin’s fall weed survey results look promising. Feedback from other Michigan/Minnesota lakes have similar success. Final treatment determination will be made after getting Savin’s Spring weed survey results. A second aquatic weed treatment may be repeated in spots if necessary. After 2 years of successful pilots to manage the density and size of the larger milfoil beds on the lake, this year we will focus on the large Milfoil bed just west of Interlaken. We have significantly reduced the milfoil beds by the marina and Birch Harbor using a concentrated form of ProceleCOR and are excited to see the results after the treatment here this summer.
